1. Is Dr. Leo Barnes Foundation an independent organization?

Yes, Dr. Leo Barnes Foundation is an independent organization which has its Board of Trustees to plan its own policies and activities.

2. What is the purview of this organization?

The Foundation gives scholarships to the seafarer’s children, more specifically children of seamen who are the members of National Union of Seafarers of India and welfare activities pertaining to the families of seafarers.

3. Who are the beneficiaries of scholarships for higher studies?

The children, wife and seafarer themselves (If Unemployed) are entitled to avail of the scholarships.

4. From what level of education the scholarships are available to the students?

The scholarships are available for degree and post graduate degree courses, and in very special cases for diplomas. After 12th standard. This award of scholarship will be considered case by case with first preference to those who had contributed to the corpus

5. Are scholarships given on merit basis or also applicable to student with lesser merit?

Presently scholarships are given to the children of seamen irrespective of merit and those who pursue higher studies after their 12th standard.

6. Are scholarships given to the seafarer’s children even after the seafarer’s retirement or death?

Yes, Scholarships are given irrespective of whether the seafarer is working / retired or deceased who has/had a CDC and NUSI membership and more specifically those who have contributed to the corpus of Dr. Leo Barnes Felicitation/Foundation fund.

7. What is the amount of scholarship awarded to the student?

The scholarship awarded is dependent upon the courses and their fee structure. It could range from few hundreds to 15000 annually, depending on the funds available by way of interest on the corpus, earmarked in the budget of the foundation.

8. Are applications accepted for the present course and also previous years?

Applications are accepted only for the ongoing current academic year.

9. How often the scholarships are awarded and the applications accept by the Foundation?

The applications are accepted throughout the year. They are processed once a year (March).

10. What are the documents to be submitted along with the applications?

A check list is provided with each application form to submit the necessary documents with the application.

11. How frequently are the applications processed and the cheques issued for scholarships?

Applications are being processed and cheques are issued only twice in a year i.e. in the month of June and December.

12. Is it necessary for the applicant to be personally present for collecting application form / submitting application form / collection of scholarship cheque?

Not necessarily, applications are sent to the applicant on receiving a request letter and the same can be sent back by post / courier, but for collecting the scholarship amount if the applicant finds it inconvenient to come down he/she can send an authority letter for the same and the cheque will be dispatched.

13. Is it in order if any correspondence related to scholarships is sent to NUSI?

All correspondence related to scholarships should be addressed directly to the office of Dr. Leo Barnes Foundation and any correspondence sent to any other office will not be entertained. Dr. Leo Barnes Foundation is an independent unit and no tie up with any other organization.

14. Are recommendations allowed in case of scholarships?

No recommendations are entertained since scholarships are given after scrutiny to the bonafide students only. The sole worthy recommendation is the copy of the receipt towards donation to the corpus of Dr. Leo Barnes Foundation in addition, to being qualified by the scrutiny committee and the receipt of fee from the college/ university.

15. Where can we get the information about this foundation?

You can procure the brochure from the Foundation‘s administrative office at Bandra. To the Office Administrator, Dr. Leo Barnes Foundation, Samudraseema, 329, Dr. Ambedkar Road, Bandra west , Mumbai 400050.

16. What other activities do you give grant?

Grant is also given to research on any sphere of seafarers. You must send the proposal and it will be scrutinized by experts and there after grant is sanctioned by the Board of Trustees.

17. Do you offer any welfare benefits?

Yes. But evaluated case by case.

18. Do you conduct any other activities to serve the seamen?

Yes. We conduct free health camps and also we provide free psychological help if anyone is in need.
